  1. Through Hang Over into Hang Pygmy

    After the briefing and kit issue in Phong Nha you drive out and start walking into the forest. The route enters the Hang Over passage and covers about 3.5 kilometres underground, which is long enough that the novelty of headlamp light wears off and you start moving like a caver rather than a tourist. A 10 metre rope descent, rigged and controlled by the safety team, drops you into the Hang Pygmy chamber. Camp is set inside the cave and dinner is cooked there.

  2. Out of the cave and back to the road

    You wake up inside the cave, which is the part people remember: no dawn, no birdsong, just the scale of the chamber once the lamps go on. After breakfast the group climbs back out and treks through the forest to the road for the drive back.

Is Hang Pygmy really the fourth largest cave in the world?

That is the ranking usually cited by cave researchers who surveyed the Phong Nha systems, measured by volume rather than length. Rankings shift as new surveys are done, and Son Doong, also here in Phong Nha, holds the top spot. Treat it as an indication of scale rather than a fixed league position.

What is it actually like to sleep in a cave?

Cool and very dark, with no dawn to wake you. The temperature underground stays around 23C year round, which is a relief after the surface heat. Tents and bedding are carried in and set up for you, and the operator uses composting toilets at camp.

How hard is the 3.5 kilometre underground section?

It is not technical, but it is long and uneven, with scrambling over rock and water in places. You are in a harness for the rope descent only. Anyone who walks regularly and does not mind enclosed spaces manages it; the age limit of 15 reflects stamina more than skill.

How does this compare with the Tiger Cave Series?

The Tiger Cave Series is a day longer and 4,600,000 VND more, and covers three caves including Hang Pygmy plus a camp at the Kong Collapse sinkhole.
