The season that actually matters: flood closures

Phong Nha's year splits harder than the temperature table suggests. From February to August the rivers are low, the trails are open and every cave in the park is reachable; March and April are the sweet spot, warm without the furnace heat that arrives from May. September to November is flood season, and it is not a drizzle problem: river levels can close Phong Nha Cave's boat route, shut the Dark Cave zipline, and suspend the expedition caves entirely. In bad years the park has paused tourism altogether for stretches of autumn. December and January are dry again but genuinely cool, which surprises people expecting tropical Vietnam: mornings in the teens, and cave river swims that take some resolve.

The caves themselves do not care what month it is. Deep inside Paradise Cave or Son Doong the air holds around 23C all year, which cuts both ways: relief in the May to September heat, and a reason to pack a layer in January.

Timing by what you came for

The ticketed sites are the most forgiving. Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave run every day of the year outside flood peaks, and a rainy-day visit is honestly one of the best uses of bad weather in Vietnam, since a kilometre underground the storm does not exist. Mooc Spring and the Dark Cave swim stops are best from April to August when the water is warm.

The guided phong nha cave tours follow the rivers. Jungle Boss trips such as Tra Ang, Hang Pygmy and Kong Collapse run most of the year but pause when the flood season closes the park, so September to November bookings carry real cancellation risk; treat a cancelled tour in that window as the safety system working. The big Oxalis expeditions run on fixed seasons: Son Doong from January to August only, Hang En from December to mid-September, and both sell their best dates far ahead.

Around Tet, Vietnam's lunar new year in late January or February, domestic travel spikes: the ticketed caves get their busiest days of the year and accommodation in Phong Nha town books out, while some family-run restaurants close for the holiday itself. It is a lively time to be there, but not a quiet one.

If you can only pick one window

Late February to April. The rivers are settled, the jungle is green from the autumn rains, daytime highs sit in the comfortable twenties, every tour in the catalogue is running, and the summer heat that makes the treks genuinely hard has not arrived. Second choice is May to August if cave swimming is the point: hotter on the trails, but the water is at its best and the days are long.
