Day by day, all 4 of them

  1. Secret Cave and Hung Ton to the Hung Dung camp

    Pickup from Phong Nha hotels around 7:00, then a transfer to the operator's Tan Hoa office for the briefing. The route crosses grass fields and the Rao Nan river to Secret Cave, drops into the next valley to Hung Ton Cave for lunch, then descends a 15 m ladder on a harness and swims through the cave into the To Mo valley. Camp is at Hung Dung beside a jade green lake.

  2. The long day through Hung Nhai valley

    The toughest stretch: about 14 km with 150 m of climbing and repeated river crossings. You swim through a small cave into the hidden Hung Nhai valley, eat lunch beside a waterfall, then climb a long hill and follow the river upstream. Camp sits on a natural lake often described as an infinity pool, with time to swim before sunset.

  3. Hang Tien 1 and 2, night at Tu Lan Lodge

    A rocky scramble reaches the huge mouth of Hang Tien 1 with its striped walls and dome ceiling; the exit is a 10 m vertical ladder on a safety harness. A short forest walk reaches Hang Tien 2, a vast stalactite passage, before a picnic lunch and the final climb to the pickup point. The night is a real bed at Tu Lan Lodge, with dinner in a villager's home.

  4. Tan Hoa by bicycle, transfer out

    A guided morning bicycle loop through Tan Hoa's cornfields and farms, with boiled corn, roasted peanuts and ginger honey tea along the way. Check-out at noon and the shuttle to Phong Nha or Dong Hoi leaves at 12:30; book onward trains or flights after 16:00.

When to go

Runs mid-November to mid-September. The system closes for about two months each autumn for the flood season, which doubles as an environmental rest period for the caves.

Questions worth asking first

Do you need to be a strong swimmer for Hang Tien?

No. The swim sections total about 100 m and everyone wears a life jacket regardless of ability, with safety assistants stationed alongside. Basic water confidence is enough.

How hard is the Hang Tien Exploration?

Level 4 of 6 on the operator's scale, their second hardest Tu Lan trip. The biggest day is about 14 km with 150 m of climbing and many river crossings, plus the harness ladder sections, so recent trekking experience is expected.

Where do you sleep?

Two nights wild camping at the Hung Dung and Hang Tien campsites, both beside swimmable lakes with composting toilets set up at camp, then a final night in a real bed at Tu Lan Lodge in Tan Hoa village.

How does this relate to Phong Nha?

Hang Tien is the largest dry cave of the Tu Lan system near Tan Hoa, about 70 km from Phong Nha town and outside the national park proper. Pickup from Phong Nha hotels is included, but the route runs from Tan Hoa, so treat it as its own destination rather than a Phong Nha day out.

When is it closed?

The system runs mid-November to mid-September and closes for about two months each autumn. That window is the flood season, and the closure doubles as a rest period for the caves.

What is the booking and cancellation policy?

Full payment at booking confirms the place. Cancelling at least 7 days before departure refunds in full; inside 7 days the booking is non-refundable. The operator's own site is the source of truth for both.
