The Hai Van Pass
The road over the mountain spur that drops into the sea between Da Nang and Hue, climbing to 500 metres with the coast on one side the whole way. It was the historical boundary between the Vietnamese and Cham kingdoms and later a French and then American strategic point; the concrete bunkers at the top are still there. Most traffic now takes the tunnel underneath, which is why the pass is quiet.
Worth knowing: The name means Ocean Cloud Pass and it earns it: the summit is often in fog when the coast below is clear.
Hue and the Imperial City
Vietnam's capital under the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 to 1945, built as a walled citadel on the Perfume River with a purple forbidden city at its centre, modelled on Beijing's. The 1968 Tet Offensive levelled much of it and restoration is still going; what stands is a mix of the original and careful rebuilding. The royal tombs are scattered in the hills south of the city and are, for many people, the better half of the visit.
Worth knowing: The citadel is large, flat and exposed, and a proper look is two to three hours of walking. Day trips from Hoi An mean four hours in a vehicle for it.
