My Son Sanctuary
A cluster of Hindu temple towers in a valley ringed by hills, built by the Cham kingdom between the 4th and 14th centuries and dedicated largely to Shiva. It is older than Angkor and was the Cham religious centre for roughly a thousand years. American bombing in 1969 destroyed much of the largest group, and what stands is brick laid without visible mortar, a technique nobody has convincingly reproduced.
Worth knowing: There is little shade and the valley holds heat. Morning departures are markedly more comfortable than midday ones, and the site is at its emptiest before about nine.
The handicraft villages
The workshops around Hoi An that supplied the port: Thanh Ha for pottery thrown on foot-driven wheels, Kim Bong for the carpentry that built the merchant houses, and the rice-paper and noodle makers who still work at dawn. These are working premises rather than exhibits, and the people demonstrating are the people who do it for a living.
Worth knowing: Buying something is the point of the stop for the villages, and there is gentle pressure. It is not aggressive, but it is there.
