Cam Thanh coconut palms
A tidal water-coconut forest a few kilometres from Hoi An, threaded with narrow channels and worked from round bamboo basket boats. The palms were planted as cover during the war and the boats were a fishing tool long before they carried visitors. The spinning demonstration most guides give is a party trick, but the paddle through the channels is quiet and genuinely pretty.
Worth knowing: You will get splashed, and in the wet season you will get wet. Bring a dry bag for anything electronic.
Lantern making
The silk lanterns hanging over the old town are built on a split-bamboo frame, and the workshops let you make one: shape the ribs, bind the frame, stretch and glue the silk. It takes about an hour, it collapses flat for a suitcase, and it is the one souvenir from Hoi An you will have made yourself.

- Meeting point in Hoi An city: 429A Cua Dai St, Hoi An. Meeting point in Da Nang city: 14 An Nhon 10 St, Son Tra.
