If you are travelling with children under nine, almost every guided cave tour in Phong Nha is closed to you, and almost no travel article says so. The ticketed sites are wide open at any age. The guided tours are not. That single split decides your whole trip here, and it is easier to plan around once you can see the actual numbers.
So here they are, in one place.
Minimum ages on every guided tour
Each operator sets a minimum age per tour based on rope work, swim sections and walking distance, not on a blanket policy. That is why the same family can be welcome on one trip and turned away from the next one down the page.

Read that column downward and the shape of the problem is obvious. Nothing guided starts below six. Between six and eight your only options are the Phong Huong trips near Khe Sanh and Tra Ang. From nine the good day treks open up. From fifteen you can camp inside a cave. The two hardest trips, Hung Thoong and Kong Collapse, want sixteen.
Two catches worth knowing before you build a plan around this table. Tra Ang is the cheapest guided cave at 800,000 VND, but it runs for private groups of twenty or more only, so a family of four cannot book it on its own. And every Phong Huong tour includes pickup within Khe Sanh town only. There is no transfer from Hue or Dong Ha, and Khe Sanh is roughly three hours from Hue, so you need your own transport plan before you book one.
Where a family with a six-year-old actually goes
Assume one child aged six, one aged nine, and no appetite for ropes. You can still fill four or five days, because the ticketed sites in Phong Nha-Ke Bang set no minimum age at all.

Paradise Cave is the one that most reliably lands with small children, because the boardwalk does the work. Take the buggy for the uphill approach, walk the kilometre inside, and be back at the car park before anyone melts down. Phong Nha Cave is the other easy win: the boat ride up the Son River is half the experience, and small kids tend to like it more than the cave itself.
Dark Cave is the most fun per dong of anything in the park for a family, and it is the one to read carefully. The full package at 450,000 VND covers the zipline, mud bath and kayaking, there is a reduced child rate, and the zipline itself carries a restriction that younger or smaller children may not be allowed on. Everything else in the package still runs for them, so nobody sits out the day, but check the zipline rule at the counter rather than promising it in the car.
One planning note that saves families a lot of grief: cave interiors sit at about 23C all year, so a child who is comfortable outside in July will feel genuinely cool inside Paradise Cave. A thin layer in the daypack is worth more than it sounds.
Where a family with a nine-year-old goes
Nine is the age that changes the trip. It unlocks the best single day out in the area, the Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley jungle trek at 1,950,000 VND, which includes Dong Hoi pickup and gives children a real jungle walk, a swim and a cave rather than a boardwalk. It also opens the gentlest overnight in the park, Ma Da Valley Jungle Camping at 5,175,000 VND over two days and one night, with no rope work anywhere in it. For a family that wants a night in the forest without harnesses, that is the one.
Victory Cave Expedition is also 9+, at 7,650,000 VND for two days and one night. It is the newest cave in the region, opened only weeks after its June 2026 survey, which is a rare thing to be able to offer a child who is old enough to understand what that means.
If you are basing yourself near Hue rather than Phong Nha, Bach Ma Discovery at 4,500,000 VND is also 9+, and it is an unusually good day for older children who like heights: a 130 m bridge, 301 via ferrata rungs and an 85 m zipline. Bach Ma itself tops out at 1,444 m about 40 km south of Hue, and park entry on its own is 60,000 to 65,000 VND if you would rather walk it independently. Do check the season, because Bach Ma runs best January to August and turns foggy and flood-prone from September to December.
Where a family with teenagers goes
At twelve, Do Quyen Waterfall Top Adventure opens up, a two-day trip built around a 200 m canyoning descent of the falls at 11,250,000 VND. Worth saying clearly, because the names get mixed up: the Gio waterfall at the Botanic Garden is about 30 m and is not the same place.
At fifteen, the two trips teenagers actually want become bookable. Hang Pygmy Exploration at 7,900,000 VND camps inside the cave, which is the experience most people picture when they daydream about Phong Nha. Tiger Cave Series Adventure at 12,500,000 VND visits three caves over three days and camps at Kong Collapse, though it does not descend it.
At sixteen the ceiling comes off entirely. Hung Thoong Exploration at 12,000,000 VND includes a 1 km swim through a flooded cave and a 60 m zipline. Kong Collapse Top Adventure at 35,000,000 VND is a five-day trip with a 100 m rope descent and a required medical check, which is a fair signal of what it asks.
Practical notes worth having
Book the age-limited tours before you book flights if your child is close to a threshold. A birthday that lands mid-trip is not something operators tend to bend on.
Get the timing right. February to August is the good window, with March and April the sweet spot, and flooding runs September to November, worst from mid-September into October, when expedition caves close and park tourism has been suspended outright in bad years. Dong Hoi is your gateway either way: it has the airport and a mainline station, sits about 45 km from Phong Nha, and the local bus is roughly 35,000 VND for a 90 minute ride.
Then work outward from the age table. One last thing. Phong Nha-Ke Bang was UNESCO listed in 2003, extended in 2015, and extended again in July 2025 across the border with Hin Nam No in Laos, making it Vietnam's first transboundary World Heritage site. Kids remember that kind of detail longer than the boardwalk.
