Four things genuinely work as a day trip from Da Nang: Hoi An, the Hai Van Pass, the Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills. Everything else that gets sold as a Da Nang day trip is either a long drive with a short visit at the end, or something that deserves an overnight. Bach Ma National Park is reachable but sits around two hours away each way, and the guided trips there include transfers within the Hue area only, so from Da Nang you are arranging your own transport on top of an already full day. Phong Nha is not a day trip from Da Nang at all. It is a two to three night side trip.
Da Nang is the biggest arrival airport in central Vietnam, which means most people planning this region land here and then try to reach everything from one base. That works better than it does in most of Vietnam, but it has limits, and knowing where they are saves you from spending a holiday in a van.

Hoi An
Hoi An is the default and it earns it. The old town is compact, the lantern-lit riverfront is exactly as photogenic as advertised, and it is close enough that going twice is reasonable: once in daylight for the merchant houses and tailors, once in the evening for the lanterns. Mornings are quiet, midday is hot and crowded, and late afternoon into evening is when the place is at its best.
If you are the sort of traveller who resents day trips on principle, Hoi An is the one to convert into a night or two and treat Da Nang as the airport rather than the base.
Hai Van Pass
The Hai Van Pass is the coastal mountain road between Da Nang and Hue, and the single best way to use it is as a transfer rather than a loop. Ride or drive it northbound on the day you move to Hue and you get the whole thing, the bunkers at the top, the view back down over Lang Co, without covering the same road twice.
If Hue is not on your itinerary, an out-and-back from Da Nang is still a good half day. Just go in the morning, because the pass collects cloud in the afternoon and the view is the entire point.
Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills
The Marble Mountains are five limestone and marble hills just south of the city, riddled with caves and pagodas and reachable in minutes from central Da Nang. There are lifts for the main climb and stairs for everything interesting after that. Two to three hours covers it properly, which makes it the natural pairing with a Hoi An afternoon.
Ba Na Hills is a mountaintop resort complex reached by cable car, best known for the Golden Bridge held up by two enormous stone hands. It is unapologetically a theme park with a French village theme, and whether you love it depends entirely on whether you wanted a theme park. What is not in question is the time it takes: it is a full day, not an add-on, and the cable car queues are longest in the middle of the day.
Bach Ma: reachable, but read the transport line first
Bach Ma National Park is the best mountain day in central Vietnam. It sits at 1,444 m about 40 km south of Hue, and the guided adventure day there costs 4,500,000 VND with a minimum age of 9. It includes a 130 m suspension bridge, a via ferrata route of 301 rungs, and an 85 m zipline, none of which you can access on a standard park ticket of 60,000 to 65,000 VND.
Here is the part that matters if you are reading this from Da Nang. Transfers on these trips are included within the Hue area only. From Da Nang you are looking at roughly two hours of driving each way, arranged and paid for by you, stacked onto a day that is already physically full. That is a 4 am start and a late return for an activity that would be a comfortable outing from a Hue hotel.
The clean fix is to move Bach Ma to the Hue leg of your trip rather than the Da Nang leg. The same logic applies to the two-day Do Quyen Waterfall Top Adventure at 11,250,000 VND, minimum age 12, built around a 200 m canyoning descent of the falls. Because you sleep in the park, the transfer problem hurts less, but the pickup is still Hue-area only.
Phong Nha: a side trip, not a day trip
Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a UNESCO World Heritage site, listed in 2003, extended in 2015, and extended again in July 2025 across the border with Hin Nam No in Laos, making it Vietnam's first transboundary World Heritage site. It contains the largest cave on earth. It is also a long way from Da Nang, and no amount of enthusiasm compresses that.
The journey is four to five hours by train from Da Nang to Dong Hoi, then a further 45 km, or 45 to 90 minutes, from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha town. That is most of a day in each direction. Any listing that sells this as a day trip is selling you a night in a vehicle.
Plan two to three nights instead and it becomes one of the best sections of a central Vietnam trip. Two nights gives you one full cave day and one easy day. For the easy day, the ticketed caves need no guide: Paradise Cave is 250,000 VND with a 1 km boardwalk and an optional buggy at 60,000 VND one way or 100,000 VND return, Phong Nha Cave is 150,000 VND plus a shared boat at roughly 550,000 to 750,000 VND per boat for up to 12 people, and Dark Cave is 450,000 VND for a full package with zipline, mud bath and kayak. Mooc Spring is 80,000 VND, or 180,000 VND with activities. Cave interiors sit around 23C year round, which is a relief you will appreciate in July. For the big day, the strongest single-day guided trip is the Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley jungle trek at 1,950,000 VND, minimum age 9. It includes pickup in Dong Hoi, which is exactly what you want if you are arriving off the train rather than already staying in Phong Nha town.
Putting it together
A clean seven-day central Vietnam trip from Da Nang looks like this: two nights Da Nang for Hoi An and the Marble Mountains, the Hai Van Pass as your transfer to Hue, two nights Hue with Bach Ma as the active day, then the train north for two nights in Phong Nha. Nothing gets rushed and nothing gets done twice.
