Three full days of ticketed sites in Phong Nha costs about 1,016,000 VND per person at the low end and about 1,312,500 VND if you take every optional extra. That is entrance fees only, and it covers both showcase caves, the zipline and mud bath package, the swimming spring and the botanic garden. Nothing in that list needs booking, a guide or a permit.
The fees themselves are published and fixed. The trap is that one of them is priced per boat rather than per person, and getting that wrong can double the cost of a morning. Here is every number, in VND, with the arithmetic shown.

The boat is the only number that can hurt you
Phong Nha Cave is entered by river. The 150,000 VND ticket is per person. The boat is not. It runs roughly 550,000 to 750,000 VND for the whole boat, which carries up to twelve people, and the exact figure is confirmed at the boat station on the day.
That single distinction is the difference between a cheap morning and an expensive one.
- Alone or in a pair, sharing a full boat of twelve: the boat works out at about 45,833 to 62,500 VND each. Add the 150,000 VND ticket and you are paying roughly 196,000 to 212,500 VND per person.
- A couple paying for a whole boat: 275,000 to 375,000 VND each for the boat, plus 150,000 VND, so 425,000 to 525,000 VND per person. For the same trip.
- A group of four splitting a boat: 137,500 to 187,500 VND each plus the ticket, so 287,500 to 337,500 VND per person.
Two people paying for twelve seats is the most common overspend in Phong Nha, and it is entirely avoidable. Ask at the boat station to be put with other travellers before you pay, and be willing to wait for a boat to fill. Nobody will offer this if you do not ask.
Three ticketed days, with the arithmetic
Here is where the headline number comes from. These are ticket costs only, per person, sharing a full boat. Beds, food and local transport are on top and vary too much to be worth guessing at.
Day one, the two headline caves. Paradise Cave at 250,000 VND, walking up from the car park rather than taking the buggy, then Phong Nha Cave at 150,000 VND plus about 45,833 VND for a shared boat at the lower rate. That is 445,833 VND, call it 446,000. Take the buggy both ways at 100,000 VND and land on the pricier boat and the same day is 562,500 VND.
Day two, the wet day. Dark Cave at 450,000 VND for the full package, then Mooc Spring at 80,000 VND. Skip the 180,000 VND activities and the day is 530,000 VND. Take them and it is 710,000 VND.
Day three, the cheap one. The Botanic Garden is 40,000 VND, and Gio waterfall inside it is about 30 metres. That is a half-day at most, which is fine, because day three is where most people either rest or book something guided.
So the three-day totals are 446,000 plus 530,000 plus 40,000, which is 1,016,000 VND at the low end, and 562,500 plus 710,000 plus 40,000, which is 1,312,500 VND with everything included. Where not to economise
Two of these fees look optional and are not.
Dark Cave at 450,000 VND is the full package: zipline across the river, swim into the cave, wade to the mud bath, kayak back. There is no cut-down version worth buying. If the price is the problem, skip the site entirely rather than buying a partial ticket, because the package is the product. It is also the most family-friendly thing in the park despite the zipline, which the guide to Phong Nha with kids goes into properly.
The Paradise Cave buggy at 100,000 VND return is worth taking on a hot day even on a tight budget. The walk from the car park is uphill and exposed, and arriving at the cave already tired means seeing less of the kilometre of boardwalk inside. Cave interiors sit around 23C all year, which is a genuine shock after that approach and a good argument for the layer you did not pack.
Getting there cheaply
Dong Hoi is the gateway, with an airport and a mainline station, about 45 km and 45 to 90 minutes from Phong Nha town. The local bus from Dong Hoi costs about 35,000 VND and takes roughly 90 minutes, which makes it far and away the cheapest way in.
Trains run about 3 hours from Hue, 4 to 5 hours from Da Nang and around 10 hours from Hanoi. What the guided tours cost, for comparison
Everything above is walk-up. Wild caves are a different economy: they are licensed one operator per cave, they run on permit caps, and there is no budget version.

Tra Ang at 800,000 VND is the cheapest guided cave on paper, but read the condition before you get excited: it runs for private groups of twenty or more only, so a couple cannot book it. In practice the cheapest guided cave day a normal traveller can actually reserve is the Elephant Cave and Ma Da Valley trek at 1,950,000 VND, minimum age nine, with Dong Hoi pickup included, which quietly saves you a transfer fare as well.
If an overnight is the ambition and the budget is finite, Ma Da Valley Jungle Camping is the entry point at 5,175,000 VND, from age nine, with no rope work at all. It is the gentlest way to sleep inside the park.

How much JBR5 is actually worth

Son Doong is about 79,500,000 VND, with roughly 1,000 permits a year across a January to August season, and a waiting list measured in years. It earns every bit of that, and no amount of budgeting changes the permit maths.
The useful move is to redirect the ambition rather than abandon it. Camping inside Hang Pygmy at 7,900,000 VND gives you the night underground for about a tenth of the price. About 1,016,000 VND covers three days of ticketed caves, springs and gardens if you share the boat and skip the extras. Add roughly 1,852,500 VND for one guided wild cave day with the code applied, and you have the fullest version of Phong Nha that does not require a permit lottery or a five-figure budget.
