What you actually see

4 places on this day, in the order you reach them.

Marble Mountains

Five limestone and marble outcrops rising straight out of the flat coastal plain between Da Nang and Hoi An, each named for an element. Only Thuy Son, the water mountain, is open: a network of caves, pagodas and viewpoints connected by stone staircases cut into the rock. There is a lift to the first level, but the interesting parts are above it and involve steps.

Worth knowing: The staircases are steep, uneven and slippery after rain. Anyone unsteady on their feet will find the upper caves hard going even with the lift.

Monkey Mountain (Son Tra)

The forested peninsula above Da Nang, officially Son Tra, with a road climbing to viewpoints over the whole bay. At its foot stands the Lady Buddha, a 67-metre statue facing out to sea. The macaques the mountain is named for are usually on the roadside near the top, along with the rarer red-shanked douc langurs if you are lucky and quiet.

Worth knowing: Do not feed the macaques or hold food in the open near them. They are habituated and will take it, and a bite means a rabies course.

Am Phu Cave

A cave inside Marble Mountains laid out as a depiction of the Buddhist underworld, with carved figures of judgement and punishment along a descending path, then a climb toward a bright opening that stands in for heaven. It is theatrical and genuinely memorable, and it is the part of Marble Mountains most people remember afterwards.

Worth knowing: Dark, humid and low in places. Bring a phone torch; the lighting is deliberately dim.

Da Nang after dark and the Han River

Da Nang's riverfront is its evening. The Dragon Bridge runs the length of the river with a dragon's head at one end, and on weekend nights it breathes fire and then sprays water. River cruises run from the quay below and take in the lit bridges, which is a short, easy way to end a long day.

Worth knowing: The fire-and-water show is Saturday and Sunday evenings only, around nine. On a weekday the bridge is just lit.
