Cam Thanh coconut palms
A tidal water-coconut forest a few kilometres from Hoi An, threaded with narrow channels and worked from round bamboo basket boats. The palms were planted as cover during the war and the boats were a fishing tool long before they carried visitors. The spinning demonstration most guides give is a party trick, but the paddle through the channels is quiet and genuinely pretty.
Worth knowing: You will get splashed, and in the wet season you will get wet. Bring a dry bag for anything electronic.
Hoi An Ancient Town
A trading port that stopped growing when the river silted up in the 18th century, which is why it is still standing. Merchant houses, Chinese assembly halls and a Japanese covered bridge from the 1590s sit on a handful of walkable streets, and the whole is a UNESCO site. The ticket is a set of admissions to a choice of heritage buildings rather than a gate fee; the streets themselves are free.
Worth knowing: The old town floods most years, usually October and November, and the ground floors take water. It is also closed to cars, so tours drop you at the edge and you walk.
The lantern boats on the Thu Bon
After dark the river below the old town fills with small rowing boats, and passengers float paper lanterns with a candle inside onto the water. It is a local custom tied to remembrance and wishes rather than a show put on for visitors, though it has plainly grown with the tourism. The boats are rowed, not motorised, and the trip is short, twenty minutes or so.
Worth knowing: Boats are priced per boat, not per person, so a couple pays what a group of six would. Agree the price before stepping in if you are arranging it yourself.
