Overnight cruises in Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is roughly 1,600 limestone islands standing out of green water across 1,500 square kilometres, and almost nobody sees it from land. The way you visit is by sleeping on a boat: you board around midday, sail out past the towers, kayak or swim somewhere quiet in the afternoon, eat dinner at anchor and wake up in the middle of it. That is why the decision here is not which tour but which ship and how many nights, and it is why the prices on this page are per cabin rather than per person. One night is enough to see the bay. Two nights takes you further from the day-boat routes and into water where you may be the only vessel anchored, which is the thing people actually remember.

A landscape that earns the cliché
The karst towers rise straight out of the water with no foothills, hundreds of them, and the scale only reads from a deck. UNESCO listed the bay in 1994 and extended the listing to neighbouring Cat Ba in 2023. Photographs undersell it because they flatten the depth.
Caves inside the islands
Sung Sot, the Surprise Cave, is a three-chamber system big enough to hold a crowd and still feel empty at the far end. Most overnight itineraries include it. Thien Cung and Dau Go sit closer to the mainland and appear on shorter routes.
Water you can get into
Kayaking through a rock arch into an enclosed lagoon is the standard afternoon, and on most boats it is included rather than an upsell. Swimming off the back of the boat in the late afternoon, when the day traffic has gone, is the quietest hour of the trip.
A floating village still being fished
Vung Vieng and Cua Van are working communities reached by bamboo rowing boat, not reconstructions. They appear mostly on the two-night routes, because the one-night loop does not get that far east.
Balconies, which change the trip
Older boats put cabins below deck with a porthole. The newer ships give every cabin its own balcony, so the view is available at six in the morning without getting dressed. On a trip whose entire point is the view, this is the upgrade that matters most.
When to go
October to December is the best window: dry, clear and mild, with the highest chance of the visibility the bay is photographed in. March and April are pleasant but often hazy. May to September is hot and humid with afternoon storms, and it is also typhoon season, when the port authority can cancel sailings at a few hours' notice. January and February are cool and frequently grey, with a fine, drizzling mist that hides the far towers.
Getting there
From Hanoi it is about 2.5 hours to the Ha Long or Tuan Chau terminals on the coastal expressway, and almost every cruise fare includes a shared road transfer from the Old Quarter. Boarding is usually around midday, so a same-morning pickup works and there is no need to travel the night before. Haiphong is closer if you are already on the coast, and Van Don airport is 50 km from the terminals.
What it costs
An overnight cabin for two, full board included, runs roughly 3,000,000 to 12,000,000 VND depending on the ship and the suite, which usually works out as the largest single line in a northern Vietnam budget. Day boats are far cheaper and a very different trip: you see the bay between about 11am and 4pm, in the hours it is busiest and the light is flattest.
Worth knowing first
- Sailings can be cancelled by the port authority for weather, most often between June and September. That decision is not the boat's and no fare survives it, so keep the day either side loose.
- A one-night cruise is really an afternoon, a dinner and a morning. If you want the quieter eastern water and a floating village, you need the two-night sailing.
- Cruise fares are quoted per cabin for two people sharing. A solo traveller pays a single rate that is well above half, and a third guest is charged as an extra bed.
- Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay are neighbouring and often sold interchangeably. Lan Ha is quieter and reached via Cat Ba; check which water your itinerary actually sails.
- Drinks are almost never included. On most boats the bar bill for two over one night comfortably exceeds the cost of a night in a Hanoi hotel.

One night or two nights in Ha Long Bay?
One night is enough to see the bay properly and it is what most people book: you get an afternoon of kayaking, dinner at anchor and a morning cave stop. Two nights buys distance. The second day sails east past the day-boat routes to quieter anchorages and usually a floating village, and it adds a full uninterrupted day on the water rather than a morning that ends with disembarkation.
How much does an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise cost?
On this page, fares start at a little over 3,000,000 VND per cabin for two guests sharing on a one-night sailing, and the largest suites on a two-night sailing run several times that. The fare covers the cabin, all meals on board and the activities in the itinerary. Drinks, tips and the entrance fees are charged separately, and the road transfer from Hanoi is usually included.
Is Ha Long Bay worth it, or is it too crowded?
The crowding is real between about 11am and 4pm, which is precisely the window a day trip puts you in. An overnight boat is out in the bay for the late afternoon, the night and the early morning, when the day fleet has gone. If you can only do a day trip, consider Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba instead, which carries a fraction of the traffic.
Do I need to get to Ha Long myself?
No. Almost every overnight fare includes a shared road transfer from central Hanoi and back, roughly 2.5 hours each way on the expressway, timed to the midday boarding. You can travel out on the morning of the cruise, and a private car can usually be arranged instead if you would rather not share.
What happens if a typhoon cancels the sailing?
The port authority suspends departures, and no operator sails against that. The boat will normally move you to another date or refund the fare, but neither replaces the day, so avoid making the cruise the last thing before an international flight during the June to September storm season.
