Galle Face Green

Galle Face Green is Colombo's beloved oceanfront promenade, a long stretch of open lawn and seawall along the Indian Ocean, and the city's favourite gathering place, especially at sunset and in the evening. As the sun goes down, the green fills with families flying kites, couples strolling, and crowds drawn by rows of street-food vendors selling Sri Lankan favourites: isso wade (prawn fritters), kottu, and more. The sea breeze, the crashing waves, and the lively, local atmosphere make it a quintessential Colombo experience.

It's free, atmospheric, and a complete contrast to a museum or temple, a place to eat, watch the sunset, and feel the pulse of the city. Flanked by historic landmarks and grand hotels (the colonial-era Galle Face Hotel at one end), it's an easy, relaxed evening out.

Un peu d'histoire

Galle Face Green was originally laid out by the British in the 19th century as a promenade along the coast (initially for horse racing and golf). It has long been Colombo's principal seaside public space and gathering ground.
