In 1943, after the International Settlement was annulled, the road was renamed East Nanjing Road, and the former Bubbling Well Road became West Nanjing Road. In 2000, a section was renovated into a pedestrian street. In 2019–2020, the pedestrian mall was extended eastward to the Bund.
