The Lacerda Elevator is a public urban elevator in Salvador, Brazil, connecting the lower city (Cidade Baixa) to the upper city (Cidade Alta). It stands 72 meters tall and was built between 1869 and 1873. The elevator has two towers, one piercing the stone slope of Ladeira da Montanha and the other, more visible, reaching the Cidade Baixa level. It carries 27 passengers per lift in a 30-second ride.

Un peu d'histoire

The elevator was originally hydraulic and later converted to electricity in 1906. Its towers were renovated in 1930 in an Art Deco style. It was listed as a historical heritage of Brazil by IPHAN on 7 December 2006.
