St John's Co-Cathedral, located in the heart of Valletta, is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Built by the Knights of St John between 1573 and 1578, its exterior is relatively plain, but the interior is a riot of gilded decoration, marble floors, and intricate frescoes. The cathedral houses two of Caravaggio's most famous works, including 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist', one of the few paintings signed by the artist. Visitors can also explore the Oratory and the museum, which contains tapestries and liturgical objects. The contrast between the modest facade and the lavish interior makes this a must-see attraction in Malta.

Don't miss

  • Admire Caravaggio's 'The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' in the Oratory.
  • Walk on the intricate marble tombstones covering the floor, marking the burial sites of knights.
  • See the richly decorated vaulted ceiling painted by Mattia Preti depicting scenes from the life of St John.
