The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a remarkable subterranean structure discovered in 1902 during construction work. This UNESCO World Heritage site dates from around 4000 BC to 2500 BC and is one of the best-preserved prehistoric temples in the world. The complex consists of three levels carved into the limestone, with chambers, halls, and passages used for burial and ritual purposes. Visitors descend into the cool, dimly lit spaces to see red ochre paintings, intricate carvings, and the famous 'Sleeping Lady' figurine. Due to its fragility, only a limited number of visitors are allowed each day, making advance booking essential.

Don't miss

  • Explore the three levels of underground chambers carved from solid rock.
  • See the red ochre spiral paintings on the ceiling of the 'Oracle Room'.
  • View the 'Sleeping Lady' figurine, a 5,000-year-old clay statue representing a reclining woman.
