Fort Ricasoli is one of the largest fortifications in Malta, built by the Knights of St. John between 1670 and 1698 to defend the entrance to the Grand Harbour. Its massive limestone walls and bastions stretch across the promontory of Rinella, offering dramatic views of Valletta and the sea. Today, the fort is a popular filming location, having appeared in Gladiator, Troy, and Game of Thrones. Visitors can explore its sprawling ramparts, tunnels, and courtyards, though some areas remain closed due to restoration. The site feels rugged and atmospheric, with a sense of history and cinematic grandeur.

Don't miss

  • Walk along the bastions for panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and Valletta's skyline.
  • Explore the underground tunnels and magazines that once stored gunpowder and provisions.
  • Spot filming locations from Gladiator, including the arena-like courtyard used for the Colosseum scenes.
