Fort Saint Elmo is a iconic star-shaped fortress at the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula, built by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century. It played a pivotal role during the Great Siege of 1565, where its defenders held out for weeks against the Ottoman army. Today, the fort houses the National War Museum, which traces Malta's military history from the Bronze Age to the present, with a focus on World War II. Visitors can explore the ramparts, parade ground, and underground chambers, and see artifacts like the George Cross awarded to Malta. The site offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour.

Don't miss

  • View the original George Cross awarded to Malta in 1942, displayed in the museum.
  • Walk the outer bastions to see the star-shaped design and imagine the Great Siege defenses.
  • Explore the underground bomb shelters and tunnels used during WWII air raids.
