The Great Temple is one of Petra's largest and most impressive structures, covering over 7,000 square meters. Despite its name, it may have served as a civic or religious assembly hall rather than a traditional temple. Visitors can explore a grand staircase, a lower courtyard with colonnades, and a small theater that once seated hundreds. The complex's sophisticated water channels and monumental proportions highlight Nabataean engineering prowess. Excavations have uncovered fragments of elephant-headed capitals and other ornate decorations, underscoring its ceremonial importance.
Don't miss
- Climb the monumental staircase to the upper terrace for a view of the complex.
- Sit in the restored theater and imagine ancient gatherings.
- Look for carved elephant-head capitals among the ruins.
