Al-Khazneh, meaning 'The Treasury,' is the crown jewel of Petra, hewn directly from the rose-red cliff face around the 1st century AD. As you emerge from the narrow Siq, the towering facade, adorned with columns, pediments, and statues, suddenly appears, creating an unforgettable moment. Originally a royal tomb, its name stems from Bedouin legends of hidden treasure. Visitors marvel at the detailed carvings and the play of light on the stone, often capturing photos from the iconic viewpoint at the end of the Siq.

Don't miss

  • Photograph the facade from the end of the Siq for the classic view
  • Examine the intricate carvings of mythological figures and floral motifs
  • Look for bullet holes from Bedouin attempts to dislodge supposed treasure
