Ed-Deir, or the Monastery, is one of Petra's largest monuments, measuring 50 meters wide and 45 meters tall. Carved in the 1st century AD, it likely served as a temple or ceremonial hall. Reaching it requires climbing about 800 steps carved into the mountain, a rewarding trek through dramatic landscapes. The facade, simpler than Al-Khazneh but more massive, features a central doorway and a large urn. At the top, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and desert.

Don't miss

  • Climb the 800+ steps for a sense of accomplishment and changing perspectives
  • Admire the sheer scale of the facade, larger than Al-Khazneh
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Petra basin and Wadi Araba from the plateau
