The Sassi di Matera is a mesmerizing historic district carved into the limestone cliffs of a deep ravine. This labyrinth of cave dwellings, churches, and alleyways has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, making it one of the oldest continuously lived-in settlements on Earth. Walking through the Sassi feels like stepping back in time: you'll see ancient stone houses stacked upon each other, some still used as homes, restaurants, and boutique hotels. The area is divided into two main quarters: Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, each with its own character. The views from the opposite side of the ravine are breathtaking, especially at sunset when the golden light illuminates the tufa stone. Don't miss the many rock-hewn churches with faded Byzantine frescoes, such as Santa Maria de Idris. The Sassi is not just a museum; it's a living neighborhood where locals go about their daily lives, giving it an authentic, vibrant atmosphere.
