Matera Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of Santa Maria della Bruna, dominates the skyline from its perch on the Civita hill. Built in the 13th century in Apulian Romanesque style, its façade features a magnificent rose window with intricate stone carvings. Inside, the cathedral is richly decorated with Baroque additions from later centuries, including gilded altars and frescoes. The highlight for many visitors is climbing the bell tower, which offers sweeping views over the Sassi and the surrounding Gravina gorge. The cathedral is still an active place of worship, so visitors should dress modestly and maintain a respectful silence. Don't miss the crypt, which houses a museum of religious artifacts. The cathedral's location at the highest point of the old town makes it a natural starting point for exploring Matera.
