Perched atop a hill overlooking the ancient city of Matera, Castello Tramontano is an imposing yet incomplete fortress that offers some of the best panoramic views of the Sassi and the surrounding landscape. Construction began in 1501 under the direction of Count Giovanni Carlo Tramontano, but was halted after his assassination in 1514, leaving the castle unfinished. Today, visitors can explore the exterior walls, towers, and the main courtyard, imagining what might have been. The site is a peaceful spot for photography and reflection, especially at sunset when the golden light bathes the stone city below. Though the interior is not open to the public, the grounds are free to access and provide a unique perspective on Matera's layered history.
