The Gravina River is not a river in the traditional sense but a deep, canyon-like gorge that carves through the Murgia plateau near Matera. This natural landmark provides some of the most breathtaking views of the Sassi, especially from the opposite rim. Hiking trails wind along the gorge, passing ancient rock churches, caves, and wild landscapes. The contrast between the rugged ravine and the ancient city perched on its edge is unforgettable. Birdwatchers will spot kestrels and peregrine falcons, while geology enthusiasts can observe layers of limestone and fossilized remains. The area is part of the Murgia Materana park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A walk along the Gravina offers a peaceful escape into nature, with the city's skyline as a dramatic backdrop.
