San Pietro Caveoso is one of Matera's most iconic churches, built directly into the rock face of the Sasso Caveoso quarter. Its façade, reconstructed in the 17th century, features a simple Baroque design with a central rose window. The church's interior is a stunning example of Baroque art, with gilded stucco, painted ceilings, and ornate altars. The real draw, however, is its location: the church seems to cling to the edge of the cliff, offering a terrace with breathtaking views of the Gravina gorge and the opposite side of the Sassi. The church is still used for services, but visitors are welcome to explore. The adjacent piazza is a popular spot for photos and a starting point for hikes into the gorge. San Pietro Caveoso is a must-see for its blend of architecture, history, and natural scenery.
