The Städel Museum, officially the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, is a cornerstone of Frankfurt's cultural landscape. Founded in 1815 by banker and art collector Johann Friedrich Städel, it houses an encyclopedic collection spanning over 700 years of European art. Visitors can explore works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso, and many others, arranged chronologically across two floors. The museum's modern extension, opened in 2012, features a striking elliptical glass roof and provides space for temporary exhibitions. Beyond the permanent collection, the Städel offers a rich program of special shows, lectures, and educational activities. Its location on the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) along the Main River makes it easy to combine with other nearby museums. The experience is both intimate and grand, with well-lit galleries that allow for close encounters with iconic paintings, sculptures, and prints.
