The Eiserner Steg (Iron Footbridge) is a beloved pedestrian bridge spanning the Main River, linking Frankfurt's Old Town with the Sachsenhausen district. Built in 1869 and rebuilt after WWII, the bridge offers stunning views of Frankfurt's modern skyline, including the Main Tower and the European Central Bank. It's famous for the thousands of 'love locks' attached to its railings by couples, a tradition that adds a romantic charm. Walking across the bridge, you'll see river cruises, the Frankfurt Cathedral, and the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment). The bridge is especially beautiful at sunset when the city lights reflect on the water. It's a free attraction and a favorite spot for photographers and locals alike.
Don't miss
- Attach a love lock to the railings (bring your own lock)
- Photograph the Frankfurt skyline from the bridge's midpoint
- Watch riverboats pass underneath
- Walk to Sachsenhausen for apple wine taverns and museums
- Visit at night when the bridge is illuminated
