Sepahsalar Mosque

Sepahsalar Mosque, also known as the Shahid Motahari Mosque, is one of the largest and most significant mosques in Tehran. Located near Baharestan Square, it was built in the late 19th century during the Qajar era. The mosque features a grand entrance portal, two minarets, and a large central courtyard surrounded by arcades. Inside, the prayer hall is adorned with intricate tilework, mirror mosaics, and a beautiful dome. Visitors can explore the complex, which also includes a theological school (madrasa) and a library. The atmosphere is serene, offering a respite from the bustling city. The mosque remains an active place of worship, so visitors should dress modestly and respect prayer times.

行前须知

• Dress modestly: women must cover hair and wear long sleeves; men should wear long pants. Scarves and chadors are available at the entrance.
• Remove shoes before entering prayer halls. Shoe racks are provided.
• Photography is allowed in the courtyard but may be restricted inside prayer halls. Ask permission.
• Non-Muslims are welcome but should avoid visiting during prayer times (especially Friday noon prayer).

历史背景

Built between 1879 and 1884 under the patronage of Mirza Hossein Sepahsalar, a prominent Qajar statesman, the mosque was designed to serve as both a religious and educational center. It later became known as Shahid Motahari Mosque after the Islamic Revolution.
