Xintiandi

Xintiandi is one of Shanghai's most fashionable districts, an upscale, pedestrian-friendly enclave where blocks of traditional 'shikumen' (stone-gate) houses, the distinctive low-rise brick lane homes of old Shanghai, have been beautifully restored and reinvented as chic restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, and galleries. The result is a stylish blend of old and new: walking its car-free lanes, you get the texture of 1920s Shanghai architecture wrapped around a thoroughly modern dining and nightlife scene. It's a favourite for an evening out, a long lunch, or simply strolling and people-watching.

Xintiandi also has historical weight: the site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (1921) is preserved here as a museum. 历史背景

Built in the early 20th century as shikumen lane housing, Shanghai's signature blend of Chinese courtyard and Western terraced-house design, the area was redeveloped from the late 1990s into the upscale Xintiandi district, preserving the architecture while transforming the interiors.
