Aslanhane Mosque

Aslanhane Mosque, also called Arslanhane Mosque, is one of Ankara's oldest and most significant religious sites, dating back to the 13th century. Built during the Seljuk period, it stands in the Cankaya district, surrounded by the modern city. The mosque's name, meaning 'Lion's Den,' derives from a lion statue once housed here. Its exterior is unassuming, but inside, visitors are greeted by a stunning forest of wooden columns supporting a flat roof, a hallmark of Seljuk mosque design. The mihrab (prayer niche) features intricate tilework, and the minbar (pulpit) is crafted from carved walnut wood. The atmosphere is serene, offering a quiet escape from Ankara's busy streets. What makes Aslanhane distinctive is its authenticity: it remains an active place of worship, preserving centuries of spiritual tradition. Visitors can admire the geometric patterns, calligraphy, and the interplay of light through small windows, which create a contemplative mood. Aslanhane Mosque was built in 1290 by the Seljuk ruler Mesud II, as recorded in an inscription. It is one of the few surviving examples of Seljuk mosque architecture in Ankara, reflecting the city's pre-Ottoman heritage. The mosque underwent restoration in the 18th and 20th centuries.
