Crawford Market, officially known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, is a bustling covered market located in the heart of South Mumbai, near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Housed in a striking Victorian Gothic building completed in 1869, the market is named after Arthur Crawford, Mumbai's first municipal commissioner. The structure features a large fountain designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of Rudyard Kipling, and a clock tower. Inside, the market is divided into sections: fruits and vegetables, spices, dry goods, and a pet section (now regulated). The atmosphere is vibrant and chaotic, with vendors calling out prices and shoppers bargaining. Built in 1869, Crawford Market was the first municipal market in Mumbai. It was designed by architect William Emerson in the Victorian Gothic style. The market was renamed after Indian social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule in 1999.
