Amdavad ni Gufa

Amdavad ni Gufa is an underground art gallery in Ahmedabad, known for its organic, cave-like architecture. Designed by the renowned architect Balkrishna Doshi, the structure resembles a series of interconnected domes covered in mosaic tiles. Inside, the walls curve organically, creating a surreal, womb-like space that houses rotating exhibitions of contemporary Indian art, particularly works by M.F. Husain. The interplay of natural light filtering through the domes enhances the experience. Visitors can explore the gallery at their own pace, often finding the architecture as compelling as the art itself. The site is located on the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Campus of CEPT University, adding an academic atmosphere.

Completed in 2003, Amdavad ni Gufa was a collaboration between architect Balkrishna Doshi and artist M.F. Husain. Doshi, a Pritzker Prize winner, designed the structure to blend with the natural landscape, using ferrocement and mosaic tiles. The gallery was intended to break away from conventional museum spaces, offering an immersive environment for art.
