Lombok sits immediately east of Bali and gets described as Bali thirty years ago, which is both lazy and, on parts of the south coast, close to true. Trawangan is the busy one with the nightlife, Air is the balanced middle, Meno is the quiet one. All three ban motor vehicles, which is most of their charm.
Kuta Lombok and the south coast
A string of wide bays with genuinely good surf and far less development than Bali's south. Selong Belanak and Mawun are the pick for swimming.
The Sasak villages
Lombok's indigenous Sasak culture is still visible in villages like Sade, with traditional houses and weaving. Go with someone who can explain it rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Waterfalls on Rinjani's flanks
Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep near Senaru, reachable without the trek, which is how most people see the mountain's landscape without committing to three days on it.
When to go
May to September is the dry season and the only sensible window for Rinjani, which closes seasonally, typically January to March, for safety. The Gilis and the south coast are pleasant year round but wetter from November to March.
Getting there
Lombok International Airport in the south has flights from Bali, Jakarta and some international routes. Fast boats run from Bali to the Gilis and to Bangsal on Lombok, and the public ferry between Padang Bai and Lembar is cheap and slow.
What it costs
Noticeably cheaper than Bali outside the Gilis, which price like a resort island. A Rinjani trek with permit, guide, porters and equipment is the single largest cost most visitors take on here.
Worth knowing first
- Rinjani requires a permit and a registered guide, and the mountain closes seasonally. Do not plan around it without checking the current status.
- The three Gilis are very different from one another. Booking Trawangan when you wanted quiet, or Meno when you wanted nightlife, is the most common mistake here.
- Lombok is predominantly Muslim and more conservative than Bali. Dress modestly away from the beaches and the Gilis.
- Fast boat operators between Bali and the Gilis vary in safety standards. Choose on reputation rather than on price alone.

Which Gili island should I choose?
Gili Trawangan for bars, dive schools and a crowd. Gili Air for a balance of restaurants and quiet, which suits most people. Gili Meno for near silence and very little to do, which is the point. All three are small, car-free and within a short boat hop of each other.
How hard is the Rinjani trek?
Hard. It is two to four days of steep volcanic terrain with camping, loose ash near the summit and a very early final push. It requires a permit and a registered guide, and the mountain closes seasonally. It is not comparable to a Bromo sunrise trip.
Is Lombok better than Bali?
Different rather than better. Lombok has emptier beaches, a bigger mountain and lower prices; Bali has vastly more choice in food, culture and infrastructure. Many trips do both, since they are an hour apart by boat or a short flight.
When is the best time to visit Lombok?
May to September: dry, and the window when Rinjani is open. The south coast surf works through much of the year, and the wet season from November to March is quieter and cheaper but less reliable.
