Labuan Bajo is a fishing town on the western tip of Flores that became the gateway to Komodo National Park, and almost everything you do here happens on a boat. The park covers three main islands and dozens of smaller ones, and the highlights are genuinely spread out: Padar's viewpoint, the dragons on Komodo and Rinca, Pink Beach, and the manta cleaning stations. That geography is why day trips and liveaboards, rather than land tours, are what people book.

Padar Island viewpoint
The three-bay view that put this park on every travel feed. It is a climb of a few hundred steps and most boats arrive at sunrise, which is both the best light and the coolest part of the day.
Komodo dragons, with a ranger
The world's largest lizards live wild on Komodo and Rinca islands. You walk with a ranger, which is not a formality: they are genuinely dangerous animals and the rangers control how close anyone gets.
Pink Beach
One of a handful of beaches worldwide where crushed red coral tints the sand. The colour is most obvious where wet sand meets the water, and the snorkelling just offshore is better than most people expect.
Manta Point
A cleaning station where reef mantas gather. Sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed, but when they happen you are in the water with animals several metres across.
Sleeping on a phinisi
Traditional wooden schooners converted for liveaboard trips. A 3D2N open trip covers far more of the park than any day trip can, and a private charter takes the whole boat for a group.
When to go
April to June and September to November are the sweet spots: dry, calm seas, fewer crowds than the July to August peak. January and February bring the strongest winds and rain, and some operators pause boat trips when the crossings get rough.
Getting there
Fly into Komodo Airport at Labuan Bajo, with direct flights from Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya. Bali to Labuan Bajo is about an hour and a half. The town is small enough to walk, and every boat leaves from the same harbour area.

A day trip by speedboat runs around $81 per person. Liveaboards start near $365 for three days including meals. Budget $30 to $50 a day on land for a guesthouse and food. Note the national park entrance fees are usually separate from tour prices, so check what is included.
Worth knowing first
- Park entrance and ranger fees are often not included in tour prices. Ask before you book so the total does not surprise you at the jetty.
- Seasickness is common on the crossings, particularly December to February. Take something before boarding rather than once you feel it.
- Boat safety standards vary. Ask about life jackets and radio equipment, and be wary of the cheapest slow boats on the multi-day routes.
- The dragons are wild animals. Stay with the ranger and do not treat them as a photo prop.

Day trip or liveaboard for Komodo?
A day trip by speedboat at around $81 reaches six of the main spots in a long day, roughly half six to five. A 3D2N liveaboard from about $365 covers far more of the park, gets you to Padar at sunrise without a rushed start, and includes all meals. If the park is the reason you came to Indonesia, the liveaboard is the better trip.
When can I see manta rays?
Reef mantas are seen year round at the cleaning stations but sightings peak in the drier months when visibility is best. No operator can promise them: they are wild animals at a natural site, and any tour that guarantees a sighting is overselling.
Is Labuan Bajo worth it if I do not dive?
Yes. Padar, Pink Beach and the dragons need no diving at all, and the snorkelling is excellent from the surface. Diving adds the manta and reef sites, but the park's best-known experiences are all above water.
How many days do I need?
Three days is the realistic minimum: an arrival day, a full day in the park, and a departure. Four or five days lets you do a liveaboard properly and still have a day in town.
