Jakarta is where most people arrive in Indonesia and where almost nobody plans to stay. That is understandable given the traffic, and slightly unfair. The old Dutch town at Kota Tua, the National Museum's collection and the food are all genuinely worth a day, and the Thousand Islands, an hour or two north by boat, turn a layover into something better than an airport hotel.

What Jakarta is actually good for
Kota Tua, the old town
The Dutch colonial quarter around Fatahillah Square, with the old city hall, the Wayang puppet museum and Cafe Batavia. Best in the early morning before the heat and the crowds.
The National Museum
The best archaeological and ethnographic collection in the country, covering the whole archipelago. If you are travelling on to Java's temples or eastern Indonesia, an hour here makes the rest of the trip legible.
The Thousand Islands
Kepulauan Seribu, a chain of small islands a boat ride north of the city, with beaches and snorkelling. The nearer ones work as a day trip; the further ones deserve an overnight.
Istiqlal and the cathedral
Southeast Asia's largest mosque, facing the Catholic cathedral across the road, a deliberate and rather moving piece of urban planning. Istiqlal welcomes visitors outside prayer times.
The food
Jakarta pulls in cooking from across the archipelago, which makes it the one place you can eat Padang, Manado, Javanese and Betawi food properly in a single day.
When to go
May to September is drier and more comfortable. The wet season from December to February brings heavy rain and localised flooding, which can make an already difficult city hard to move around.
Getting there
Soekarno-Hatta International is Indonesia's main gateway, connected to the city by airport rail link, which is usually faster than a taxi in traffic. Jakarta is also the hub of the Java rail network, with trains south and east to Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya.
What it costs
Cheaper than most Asian capitals for food and transport, more expensive than the rest of Indonesia for hotels. The MRT and airport rail are inexpensive and avoid the traffic that makes taxis costly in time if not money.
Worth knowing first
- Traffic dictates everything. Use the MRT and the airport rail link where you can, and cluster what you do by district.
- The city is enormous and has no single centre. Choose a base near what you actually want to see rather than assuming a central hotel exists.
- Thousand Islands boats leave from Ancol and Muara Angke early in the morning, and last returns are mid-afternoon. Check both before planning.
- Flooding during the wet season can genuinely disrupt travel. If you are connecting to an onward flight in that window, leave real margin.
Jakarta questions people actually ask
Is Jakarta worth visiting?
For a day or two, yes: Kota Tua, the National Museum and the food justify a stop, particularly if you are already flying through. It is not a city most people would fly to specifically, and it is fair to treat it as a gateway rather than a destination.
What can I do on a Jakarta layover?
With a full day, the old town in the morning and the National Museum after lunch works well, using the MRT. With longer, a Thousand Islands day trip gets you out of the city and onto a beach and back the same evening.
Are the Thousand Islands worth a day trip?
The closer islands are a genuine change of scene within a couple of hours of the city, with beaches and reasonable snorkelling. They are not Raja Ampat and it is worth going with that expectation. If you have a spare night, staying over is better than a day trip.
How do I get from the airport into Jakarta?
The airport rail link is usually the fastest and most predictable option, since it bypasses the traffic that can make a taxi journey take hours at the wrong time of day.
