Bromo at sunrise
The classic view from the Penanjakan area looks across the caldera to Bromo smoking in front of Semeru. Jeeps leave around three in the morning to be in position for first light.
The Sea of Sand
The volcanic plain inside the caldera, crossed on foot, on horseback or by jeep to reach Bromo's crater stairway. It is a genuinely strange landscape, quite unlike anywhere else in Java.
Ijen's blue fire
Sulphuric gases igniting as they emerge, visible only in the dark, which is why the climb starts around one in the morning. It is one of a very small number of places on earth where this occurs.

When to go
April to October, the dry season, when the views are clear and the trails are safest. Both volcanoes can close at short notice on volcanic activity, and Ijen occasionally shuts on gas levels regardless of season.
Getting there
Most trips start in Malang or Probolinggo for Bromo and Banyuwangi for Ijen, all reachable by train from Surabaya or Yogyakarta. Banyuwangi is also the ferry port for Bali, which is why many people do this trip travelling between Java and Bali.
What it costs
Park entrance fees apply at both and are higher for foreign visitors, with weekend rates higher again at Bromo. Jeep hire at Bromo is usually shared. The whole two-volcano trip is inexpensive by international standards; the cost is in sleep.
Worth knowing first
- Both volcanoes mean night starts. Bromo is around three in the morning and Ijen around one. Two nights in a row of this is genuinely tiring.
- It is cold at Bromo's viewpoint before dawn, near freezing at altitude in the dry season. Travellers arriving from Bali in shorts regret it every single morning.
- A proper gas mask matters at Ijen, not a cloth one. The sulphur gusts are severe and reputable operators supply the right equipment.
- Both can close without warning on volcanic activity. Have a fallback plan rather than a non-refundable connection the next day.

Can you do Bromo and Ijen in one trip?
Yes, and most people do, usually as a two or three day run between Yogyakarta or Surabaya and Bali. It means consecutive very early starts, so build a recovery day into whatever comes next rather than landing in Bali exhausted.
What time does the Ijen blue fire climb start?
Around one in the morning, because the flames are only visible in darkness. You climb, see the blue fire, then wait for dawn to reveal the crater lake, which is the reason the timing works out well despite the hour.
How cold is Bromo at sunrise?
Cold enough to be a shock, close to freezing at the viewpoint in the dry season before dawn. Most arrivals come from tropical sea level and pack accordingly. Bring a proper jacket, a hat and gloves.
Is the Bromo jeep tour necessary?
For the sunrise viewpoint, effectively yes: it is a long way in the dark on rough tracks and jeeps are the established way there. It is possible to walk to Bromo's crater from Cemoro Lawang independently in daylight, which is a good option if you skip the sunrise.
