Place de l'Etoile

Place de l'Etoile (also known as Nejmeh Square) is a historic square in downtown Beirut, characterized by its distinctive Art Deco clock tower and surrounding Ottoman-style buildings. The square is a focal point for political demonstrations, celebrations, and public gatherings. Lined with cafes and restaurants, it's a popular spot for both locals and tourists to relax and people-watch. The area was heavily damaged during the Lebanese Civil War but has been beautifully restored, blending old-world charm with modern vitality. At night, the square is beautifully lit, creating a lively atmosphere. It's also close to other attractions like the Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque and the Beirut Souks.

Een stukje geschiedenis

Place de l'Etoile was built during the French Mandate period in the 1920s and 1930s, designed by French architect Michel Ecochard. It was originally named Place de l'Etoile after its star-shaped layout, and later renamed Nejmeh Square (meaning 'star' in Arabic).
