Piazza del Campidoglio is a masterpiece of Renaissance urban planning, designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century. Situated on the Capitoline Hill, one of Rome's seven hills, the square is a harmonious ensemble of three palaces: Palazzo Senatorio, Palazzo dei Conservatori, and Palazzo Nuovo. At its center stands a bronze equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (a replica; the original is in the nearby Capitoline Museums). The square's trapezoidal shape and intricate paving create a sense of perspective that draws the eye toward the statue and the grand staircase leading up from the city. Visitors can climb the Cordonata, a gently sloping ramp designed by Michelangelo, to reach the piazza. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Roman Forum and the city beyond. The surrounding buildings house the Capitoline Museums, which contain ancient Roman sculptures, paintings, and artifacts. The piazza is a popular spot for photography, relaxation, and soaking in the layered history of Rome, from ancient to Renaissance to modern times.
