Parco di Colle Oppio

Parco di Colle Oppio is a large public park on Oppian Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome. Located near the Colosseum, it offers a peaceful escape from the city's bustle while providing stunning views of ancient landmarks. The park covers about 11 hectares and includes the ruins of the Domus Aurea, Emperor Nero's lavish palace, which is partially open for guided tours. Walking paths wind through pine and cypress trees, past fountains and statues. It's a favorite spot for locals to jog, picnic, or simply relax on a bench. The park is less crowded than other Roman attractions, making it a pleasant place to unwind after visiting the Colosseum. Despite its central location, it feels like a hidden gem, with quiet corners and viewpoints that offer excellent photo opportunities of the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

A bit of history

Colle Oppio was originally part of the Esquiline Hill and was the site of Nero's Domus Aurea after the great fire of 64 AD. Later, the Baths of Trajan were built over part of the palace. The area became a public park in the 19th century.
