Un peu d'histoire
The monument was erected in 1954 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Moscow's first mention in historical chronicles. It replaced an earlier statue of Soviet leader Yuri Dolgoruky's namesake, and was designed by sculptor Sergei Orlov. The prince himself was a medieval ruler of the Rostov-Suzdal region.
