Marine Drive is Mumbai's great seafront boulevard, a graceful 3.6-km curve of promenade along the Arabian Sea, lined on its landward side by a parade of weathered Art Deco apartment buildings (among the largest such ensembles in the world). At night, the streetlights tracing the bay's arc earn it the nickname 'the Queen's Necklace.' It's where Mumbai comes to breathe: families, couples, joggers, and street-food vendors gather on the sea wall at sunset, watching the waves crash and the city lights come on.

There's no single 'sight' here, the experience is the walk, the sea breeze, and the people-watching, ideally with a paper cone of bhel puri. It runs from Nariman Point to Girgaon Chowpatty beach at the northern end, and it's the perfect early-evening counterpoint to the city's intensity.

Un peu d'histoire

Built on reclaimed land in the 1920s–30s, Marine Drive was developed with a long sweep of Art Deco residential buildings that now form part of a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. Its seafront promenade quickly became a beloved public space and an emblem of the city.
