Chowmahalla Palace was the seat of the Nizams of Hyderabad, the fabulously wealthy rulers of the princely state, and remains a stunning showcase of their opulence. The name means 'four palaces,' and the complex centres on grand courtyards, a magnificent durbar hall (Khilwat Mubarak) with its dazzling Belgian-crystal chandeliers, and elegant buildings blending Mughal, Persian, and European styles. Among the treasures is a vintage car collection (including a 1912 Rolls-Royce) and displays of the Nizams' robes, weapons, and artefacts, evoking a vanished world of extraordinary princely splendour.
Beautifully restored (it won a UNESCO heritage award for conservation), it's a more tranquil, manageable alternative to the city's busier sights, and the best window into Hyderabad's royal past. It's near the Charminar and the old city, easy to combine. Allow a couple of hours to wander the courtyards, halls, and collections.
