The Original Site of Astor Hotel marks the location where Tianjin’s first Western-style hotel once stood. The Astor Hotel was built in 1863 by British businessman John Dent, catering to foreign diplomats, traders, and travelers in the city’s bustling concession area. The original building was later replaced by a larger structure, but this site commemorates its historic significance. Today, the location is marked by a plaque and a small garden, offering a quiet spot amid the modern city. The surrounding area, along Taierzhuang Road, is lined with colonial-era buildings that reflect Tianjin’s cosmopolitan past. Visitors can imagine the hotel’s heyday when it hosted notable figures like Herbert Hoover and the last emperor of China, Puyi. The site is a poignant reminder of Tianjin’s role as a treaty port and its blend of Eastern and Western influences. While little remains of the original hotel, the atmosphere of the historic district makes it a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts.
