Independence Square, officially Independence Memorial Hall, is a landmark in Colombo's Cinnamon Gardens area. It commemorates Sri Lanka's independence from British rule in 1948. The centerpiece is a grand memorial hall built in the style of a traditional Kandyan audience hall, with stone pillars and a raised platform. Surrounding the hall are manicured lawns, fountains, and walking paths, making it a popular spot for locals to relax, jog, or fly kites. The square also houses the Independence Memorial Museum underground, which displays artifacts from the independence movement. At night, the monument is beautifully lit. The area is peaceful and offers a break from the city's hustle, with nearby attractions like the National Museum and Viharamahadevi Park.
