Founded in 1900 as the Art Museum of Toronto by private citizens, it was renamed the Art Gallery of Toronto in 1919 and the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1966. The museum acquired The Grange in 1911 and opened it as its first permanent building in 1913. Major expansions followed, including a 2004–2008 redevelopment by Frank Gehry, his first work in Canada.
