Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of the oldest and most atmospheric prehistoric sites in Britain, dating back to around 3000 BC. Set on a natural plateau, the circle comprises 38 stones in a unique layout that frames panoramic views of the surrounding fells, including Helvellyn and Skiddaw. Visitors can walk among the stones, touch their lichen-covered surfaces, and imagine the rituals that once took place here. The site is free to access and rarely crowded, especially in early morning or late afternoon light.
Don't miss
- Count the 38 stones and note the unusual rectangular internal setting.
- Photograph the circle with Blencathra mountain as a backdrop.
- Visit at sunrise or sunset for dramatic lighting and fewer people.
