Bassenthwaite Lake is the largest of the Lake District's lakes by volume but surprisingly shallow, creating a unique habitat for wildlife. It's a designated National Nature Reserve, famous for ospreys that nest nearby and for its wintering wildfowl. The lake's peaceful shores are ideal for quiet walks, birdwatching, and photography, with the backdrop of Skiddaw and other fells. Unlike busier lakes, Bassenthwaite retains a tranquil, natural feel, with no motorboats and limited development along its shores.
Don't miss
- Watch for ospreys at the Osprey Viewpoint near Dodd Wood (seasonal)
- Walk the gentle path along the western shore for lake and mountain views
- Visit in winter to see large flocks of ducks and geese on the water
