The Hippodrome of Constantinople was the chariot-racing and social hub of the Byzantine Empire. Today, it's a long, open square called Sultanahmet Meydanı, lined with monuments. The Egyptian Obelisk, brought from Luxor, and the Serpent Column from Delphi stand as ancient relics. The German Fountain, a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II, adds a late Ottoman touch. Visitors can stroll the plaza, imagining the roar of the crowd during races, and see the remains of the spina wall.

Don't miss

  • See the 3,500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk, originally erected at the Temple of Karnak.
  • Find the Serpent Column, a bronze monument from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
  • Admire the neo-Byzantine German Fountain, a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II.
